A FREE PAIR OF SOCKS: THE POWER OF A SMALL GIFT

Apr 17, 2025

Every Christmas growing up, we’d pile into the car and drive from Northern California to Pasadena to visit my grandma. And every year—without fail—we’d stop at a local clothing store in Eagle Rock called Piller’s.

Now, Piller’s wasn’t just a pit stop—it was a tradition. Founded in 1947, it was known for offering quality clothing at affordable prices. But what made it special wasn’t the discounts. It was the relationships. The details. The extra touch.

One year, I was picking out a pair of dress shoes. As we were checking out, the salesman walked over to a shelf, grabbed a pair of socks, and handed them to me. “These are on the house,” he said with a smile.
Another year, he said, “Pick out two pairs of socks as my gift to you.”

I was just a kid—but I’ll never forget how that felt. No one gave away free socks. Especially not at a store. But that moment stuck with me. Not because of the socks, but because of the heart behind them.

It Wasn’t About the Socks

My dad bought a dress shirt once, and the same thing happened: “Pick out a tie to go with it.” A simple gesture. But we felt seen. Valued. Remembered. That one-dollar investment did something no sale or discount could do—it built trust. And the next year? We didn’t even consider shopping anywhere else.

The free pair of socks sealed it. That experience taught me something that still echoes through my creative work today: People don’t just remember what they buy. They remember how they feel.

The Power of a Small Gift

Most creatives miss this. We focus on the work—the shot, the edit, the final cut. And yes, the work matters. But people come back because of how we made them feel. The socks weren’t expensive. But they were unexpected. And that surprise created delight.

Here’s what I’ve realized: We all have a pair of socks to give. Something extra. Something generous. Something small that makes a big impression.

What’s Your Free Pair of Socks?

If you’re a video maker, a creative, or a storyteller, think about the content you admire. The creators you follow. The ones you trust. Why do you return to them? It’s not just the gear. Or the polish. It’s the unexpected value they add.

🎬 A behind-the-scenes trick that changes how you shoot.
🎙 A podcast episode with real, usable insights.
📖 A free guide that helps you take the next step.
💡 A generous answer to a comment or question.

That’s the “free pair of socks.” The extra value. The thing they didn’t have to do—but did anyway. And the best creatives? They build entire communities around that kind of generosity.

What I Want to Give You

Here’s the truth: this blog, this podcast, these videos—they’re my socks. Everything I share is meant to help you become a better storyteller. A sharper filmmaker. A more confident creative. Not because you bought something. But because you showed up.

And if I’ve helped you—if I’ve earned your trust—maybe one day, you’ll be ready for coaching or to take my course. But even if you never do, I want you to walk away with something that matters. That’s the kind of creative business I want to run: one built on relationship, not just transaction.

Now it's Your Turn

Now I’m flipping it to you. What’s your version of a free pair of socks?

✅ Is it a free download or tip you share in your content?
✅ Is it a comment that helps someone get unstuck?
✅ Is it a mindset shift or insight you offer without asking for anything in return?

When you give first, you build trust. You stand out. You create loyalty.

And in a world where everyone is trying to sell something, maybe you become the one people come back to—because you gave without expecting anything.

Take This With You

This week, I want to challenge you: Give someone your free pair of socks. It doesn’t have to be flashy. Just meaningful. And if this story resonated with you, let me know. Share it. Comment. Pass it on.

And if you ever want help taking your creative game from good to great—you know where to find me. Let’s build something that lasts.
